Discover Royal India Cuisine Restaurant

The first time I walked into Royal India Cuisine Restaurant at 575 Keystone Ave, Reno, NV 89503, United States, I expected the usual buffet-style Indian diner experience. What I got instead felt closer to a neighborhood hangout where the owners actually remember your face and ask how spicy you want things today. That kind of personal touch is rare, and after several visits over the last year, it has become my go-to spot whenever friends ask where to find real Indian food in Reno.

On my second visit, I watched the kitchen team prepare a batch of chicken tikka masala from scratch. The chef marinated the chicken in yogurt, ginger, garlic, and garam masala, then grilled it before finishing it in a tomato-cream sauce. According to the Indian Journal of Traditional Knowledge, marination with yogurt and spices doesn’t just add flavor, it also improves tenderness and digestibility. You can taste that science at work here because the meat is never rubbery, even when the dining room is packed.

The menu reads like a guided tour of North Indian comfort food: butter chicken, lamb vindaloo, vegetable korma, dal makhani, and biryani that comes out steaming in a metal pot. During one lunch rush, I noticed a family at the next table trying Indian cuisine for the first time. The server explained the difference between naan and roti and suggested a mild coconut curry for their kids. That kind of explanation turns an intimidating menu into a friendly experience, which probably explains why the reviews online are so consistently positive.

I’m not the only one obsessed with their naan. A friend who studied food science told me that the blistered texture comes from the tandoor oven reaching temperatures above 900°F. The Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations has documented how traditional clay ovens lock in moisture while creating that smoky char. At this diner, you can see the baker slapping dough onto the sides of the oven, and within minutes it lands on your table brushed with ghee. It’s simple, but it’s a craft.

Another reason this place stands out is how they handle dietary needs. The American Dietetic Association reports that nearly 30% of Americans now seek vegetarian or plant-forward meals at least twice a week. Royal India Cuisine Restaurant doesn’t just offer token veggie dishes; the paneer curries, chana masala, and mixed vegetable sabzi are built with the same care as the meat entrées. I once brought a vegan coworker here, and the staff walked her through the menu, flagging which sauces used cream and which were coconut-based. She left a glowing review that night.

The location itself is easy to miss if you’re speeding down Keystone Avenue, but inside it feels warm and relaxed, with Bollywood music floating softly in the background. On weekends the dining room fills with locals and visitors from nearby hotels, and I’ve overheard people swapping tips about other Reno locations while waiting for mango lassi refills. It feels like a tiny cultural bridge tucked into the city.

There are limits, of course. During peak dinner hours the wait time can stretch, and not every dish is always available. Indian cooking relies heavily on fresh spices, and supply fluctuations mean certain items rotate in and out. The owners are upfront about it, which I appreciate more than being served something that’s been sitting under a heat lamp.

What keeps me coming back isn’t just the food; it’s the consistency. According to a 2023 National Restaurant Association report, consistency is the number-one factor in customer loyalty for independent diners. I’ve tested that theory here by ordering the same lamb curry three visits in a row, and each plate tasted just as rich and balanced as the last. That’s not luck; that’s process, recipes refined over years, and a kitchen team that actually cares about what hits the table.

Whether you’re scanning menus online, hunting for your next favorite lunch spot, or checking reviews before bringing your parents somewhere new, this little Indian diner on Keystone Avenue manages to feel both approachable and authentic at the same time.

  • Love this restaurant! We ordered the Cal-Jone Chicken, naan, and the Vegetarian Thali. We ordered basically a level-one spice and all of it was delicious and not too spicy. I loved the three condiments that were provided - they added so much flavor to each item. Our favorites were the Cal-Jone Chicken (amazingly crispy crust with no soggy bottom!) matar paneer, and choley. We will definitely return!

  • We had the Royal feast and each couple was able to share it. It was a lot of great food! We are from San Jose and we have a high bar when it comes to Indian cuisine. The food was on par. The service was attentive and the recommendation for the beef curry was incredibly soft and flavorful. Food came out on a large compartmentalized metal tray and a basket of naan, a side of appetizers and chutneys. 10/10 would come again. Did not disappoint.

  • Delicious. I enjoyed the dinner special they offer, good variety and plenty for leftovers for the next day. All the meat is perfectly cooked and tender. The rice is well cooked too. The yogurt sauce was very tasty and a great palette cleanser between the different dishes. We got spicy level 4 (medium hot), and it was not too spicy, white people can definitely handle 4 and below. I will be trying the extra spicy (6) later and update with how spicy it is. The service here was good too, though I cannot offer much about it since I did takeout, the staff if very friendly though, and the atmosphere inside was welcoming.

  • My favorite Indian restaurant in Reno! We recently celebrated my sister’s birthday here and they made it so special. They even got her a cake! We will always remember how kind the staff was with us. They always go above and beyond. I will always be a customer of this restaurant!

  • First time trying Indian food and Royal India Cuisine in Reno is EVERYTHING I started with the Mixed Appetizer Platter and wow! Samosas – crispy little potato pockets that made me say “yes, more please” with every bite. Chicken Pakora – I thought it’d be spicy… nope! Just crunchy, juicy fried chicken perfection. Veg Pakora – my absolute favorite. Crispy, light, addictive. I kept stealing them off the platter. Paneer Pakora – fried cheese with a tofu-like texture. Soft, slightly firm, melts in your mouth. Never had anything like it. Aloo Tikki – crispy outside, soft inside. Pure comfort food vibes. Then came the main course. Butter Chicken – creamy, rich, flavorful, spice level 3 (perfect for me). Not spicy at all, which I loved. Aloo Saag – potatoes in spinach and cream. Smooth, comforting, full of flavor. Garlic Naan – soft, pillowy, garlicky. I didn’t even know there were so many ways to make naan but now it makes total sense. And let’s talk drinks… the Mango Splash (mango juice, vodka, Sprite, lime) is dangerously good. Sweet, fresh, and I may have finished it too fast. Everything on the plate was amazing. Totally approachable for a first-time Indian food eater. The staff is super friendly, the vibe is cozy and perfect for a date night or just a fun night out. Can’t wait to go back. Ask about 15% off $50+ You’re welcome

  • This spot really surprised me: it looks like a quaint diner from the outside, but it really opens up and is very nice in the inside. My mom and I shared vegetable samosas, naan, and chicken tikka masala (my mom cant handle heat). Everything was amazing. Probably some of the best tikka masala and naan I have had in a long time. The special tea was also a 10/10. The waiter was also very nice. I am definitely going to return to try some more of the dishes.

  • Perfect restaurant. I have been eating here regularly for the last three years. I've been here into the closing hours of the night on several occasions. My go to order was the lamb mushroom [spicy] with a side of the indian spice. I've gotten to know the owners personally and they have always had great recommendations. It has gotten to the point where I come with groups of friends and all of them enjoy their individual choices. Chicken pakora is my favorite appetizer, bhatura is my preferred side instead of naan. You will not regret eating here, it is the best indian food I've had in my life and it has been great to feel like a part of the close knit group here every meal. 10 out of 10
